Comments: WW2 RAF/RAAF Escape & Evasion Buckle Compass.
This very clever concealed escape compass is based on the standard battledress belt buckle that was completely hidden from view. The central bar of the buckle has a small sliding metal sleeve over it. When this is moved it reveals/releases a small flat metal compass pointer. This flat piece of metal then balances on the pin to point north, as shown in the image.
