About the XXIX title:The Fighting Twenty Nine Ride Again!
In 1899 a Squadron of the Lancers sailed to England to take part in combined training. On the way home from England the troop ship stopped in at Cape Town, South Africa, and our soldiers became the first of any soldiers in the Commonwealth to volunteer for the Boer War.

Over the course of three weeks they managed to scrounge enough equipment for a composite troop of 29 soldiers to be formed. These 29 attached themselves to the British units fighting at the time, and earned a solid reputation as fighting soldiers. They were soon known as “The Fighting Twenty-Nine”.
To honour this legacy, the Regiment recognised those soldiers who performed at the highest standard. Those who are worthy will have the honour of wearing the “XXIX” badge on their shoulder patch.
This was only worn for a few years.
