8th/12th Regiment (8/12 Regt) was formed at Holsworthy Barracks on 16 November 1973 through amalgamation of the 8th Medium Regiment (RAA) and the 12th Field Regiment (RAA).
8/12 Regt has been based at Robertson Barracks in Darwin since 1999. The role of the unit is to coordinate and execute joint fires and affects in order to enable successful 1st Brigade operations. 8/12 Regt is capable of providing a brigade-level Joint Fires and Effects Coordination Centre (JFEEC), nine Artillery Observer Joint Fires Teams (JFT) and has three gun batteries equipped with 155mm M777A2 towed light-weight howitzers.
The current formation of 8/12 Regt is:
• 101st Battery
• 102nd (Coral) Battery
• 103rd Battery
• 115th Operations Support Battery
• Combat Service Support Battery
8/12 Regt is equipped with the Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System (AFATDS), which is a fully automated digital battle-management system. It will also take delivery of the Digital Terminal Control System under the Land 17 project.
Throughout its history 8th/12th Regiment has deployed combat troops in World War I (Egypt, Gallipoli and France), Vietnam, Malaya, Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste (East Timor), Iraq and Afghanistan.
