The 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, is a regular light infantry battalion of the Australian Army.
The battalion is currently based at Lavarack Barracks in Townsville where it forms part of the 3rd Brigade.
The 2nd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment was first formed as the Australian 66th Battalion in 1945. It has deployed to some of Australia’s most significant engagements including the Occupation of Japan, the Korean War, the Malayan Emergency and the Vietnam War.
In more recent times, the battalion has participated in operations in Rwanda, East Timor (Timor-Leste) and the Solomon Islands. It contributed rifle companies to the security force protecting the Australian embassy in Baghdad following the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
In May 2006, 2 RAR’s headquarters, support company and a rifle company deployed to Iraq as part of the third rotation of the Al Muthanna Task Group.
The motto of the 2nd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment is ‘Second to none’.
