Operation OUTREACH began on 27 June 2007, providing support to other Government agencies including the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, the Department of Health and Ageing, Centrelink, the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, the NT Police and, the NT Department of Health and Community Services.
More than 600 ADF personnel served in OP OUTREACH. They were drawn from the Army, Navy and Air Force including approximately 400 soldiers from the Army’s North West Mobile Force (NORFORCE), a Regional Force Surveillance Unit based in the NT and the Kimberley Region of Western Australia.
Lieutenant Colonel Michael Rozzoli of the Australian Army’s North West Mobile Force (NORFORCE) commanded Operation OUTREACH Joint Task Force 641 (JTF 641) from October 2007.
NORFORCE has built significant goodwill, trust and recognition in indigenous communities during the last 26 years. The unit has a high proportion of Aboriginal soldiers whose talents were fully utilised in Child Health Checks, logistical support to the construction of 18 new police stations, and in the provision of transport and linguistic support.
