In August 2010, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) contributed to an AusAID-led whole-of-Government humanitarian aid response to the devastating floods in  Pakistan, which resulted in 20 per cent of the total land area (approximately 796,095 square kilometres) being inundated. The disaster saw approximately 1,700 people killed and 1.9 million homes destroyed after flash flooding occurred in northern Pakistan in late July 2010.
The Australian Joint Task Force (JTF) 636 deployed during the period 24 August to 6 November 2010 and formed a part of the Australian Medical Task Force (AMTF), which totalled 180 personnel. The Medical Task force included 36 Defence and 28 civilian health specialists.
The main contingent of the task force was based at Camp Cockatoo in Kot Addu, with a smaller contingent located at Multan air base. Waters from the Indus River had flooded the Kot Addu region after the banks of the Taunsa Punjnad and Muzaffargarh canals breeched due to the excessive flood waters. An added level of complexity with the establishment of the AMTF facility was the heightened insurgent and terrorist threat in the area, which restricted the movement of AMTF personnel and required a full range of force protection measures to be in place to secure the AMTF personnel and facility. The AMTF at Kot Addu and Multan contributed to primary health care, logistics, communication and field engineering capabilities in support of the Pakistan Government’s disaster response and relief efforts.
