The Queensland Imperial Bushmen units were mounted infantry like most of the effective units in South Africa. The difference with “Imperial” units was that costs were bourne by the British or “Imperial” government rather than by the Colonial or later Commonwealth government.

Enlistees were required to be good shots, good riders and practical bushmen of experience, to have good eyesight and hearing, and otherwise to be of “sound” health. Age 21 to 38 years, chest measurement 86 centimetres, height 1.7 to 1.8 metres; weight, not over 74 kgs; to undergo a physical examination and to be unmarried for preference. The unit consisted of three companies (or squadrons ) commanded Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Ayuoton. The unit consisted of 387 all ranks and 550 horses.
